November Issue: #ProjectPLN

It’s here, it’s here!  The November issue of Project PLN is finally finished (thanks to many of you!) and ready to share.

We are excited about the November issue of Project PLN because it is full of feel-good stories about the amazing things that are happening in schools around the world.  We have a great collection of stories that will have  you inspired and thankful to be a part of this thing we call education.  Take a look at the stories in the new issue, leave a comment for those who contributed and feel free to share your own stories on Twitter using the hash tag #SchoolDidaGoodThing

At Anastasis, we had a few students share what good things they saw happening at school, it is always great to have the kids perspective!  Be sure to check out that post in Project PLN this month!

For the December Issue, we want to do something AWESOME. We want to hear from students from across this country and around the world. Educators, politicians, parents and many more have been doing a lot of talking about what schools should look like to best serve students. Well, we had the crazy idea of actually asking the students what they would want their school to look like if they could design it! These can be group projects or a collection of smaller projects. If you send it, we will publish it. :-)  I did this project with students a few years ago and it was really neat.  Amazing things happen when you ask for student input!

Using this Google Doc, please sign up for the grade level you teach and have your students draw, write, film, animate, etc what they want in their dream school. In all, we would like to have 13 posts representing K-12.

We would love to have all submissions by Monday December 19 so we can put them up for Tuesday December 20th before the Holidays get the best of us.

October #ProjectPLN: The BEST issue!

Woohoo! It is October which means a shiny brand new issue of #ProjectPLN.

For the October issue we asked everyone to submit “The Best” of education. Educators from around the world submitted lesson plans, apps, web tools, etc. that have been “The Best” for them.  I, for one, am newly inspired and ready to use some of the best shares with our teachers at Anastasis Academy!

We would be honored to have YOU (yes you) participate in the next issue of Project PLN.  Here is how:

In November, we are having a #SchoolDidAGoodThing issue. We want people to share the stories of how school did a good thing for them. These stories serve as an inspiration to teachers and the community. It is a nice reminder why we all do what we do. We really hope you will share a story with us on how school did a good thing.

December is going to be epic. We have an idea for the December issue that we really love. We have declared December, “The Student Voice Issue”. We want to encourage teachers to have students write about, film, draw, etc. what they want their dream school to look like. Our goal is to have 13 posts with 1 post representing each grade of K-12. We still have some logistics to work out, but we want to get the idea out there now so interested teachers can think about working with their students on this exciting project.

We hope you like this month’s issue of ProjectPLN and we want to hear from you about what we can do to make it better.

As always, feel free to email posts to ProjectPLN10@Gmail.com, check in on us at Twitter @ProjectPLN or say hello on Facebook.

#ProjectPLN: Best. Issue. Ever.

We are getting geared up for the Best issue of Project PLN. Ever.  What makes it the best?  You do! With your submissions of the “Bests” in eduction.  This could be the best lesson you have ever taught (or learned), the best technology tool you use with your students, the best book on education, the best manipulative you use with your students, the best field trip you have ever been on with students…you get the point.

We all have a classroom favorite, this is your chance to share that favorite with the rest of us!  Please send us your submissions for the October issue by Sunday, October 2 (2011).  The issue will go live on Tuesday October 4 over at http://projectpln.com.  Send your submissions to ProjectPLN10@gmail.com

Call for Posts: April Issue of #ProjectPLN

Hello all!  I am back in town which means that my to do list has grown a mile.  That list includes putting together the April issue of Project PLN.  The problem: we still need some posts!  If you would like to be a contributor to the April issue of Project PLN, we would love to have you.

Topic for the April issue: Mistakes. We have all made them. Sometimes it is easy to forget about them and move on, but mistakes are an important part of what makes us a better educator. We tell students to learn from their mistakes because it will help them grow as a person. Educators are no different. We often share our successes with the world, but sometimes our slips can offer support and insight for other teachers out there.   Share your learning with all of us by sending your posts (remember these can be re-posts you have already written) to projectpln10@gmail.com.  Be sure to include a link to your blog or website (if you have one), your name as you would like it to appear in the issue, and your Twitter ID (if you have one).

You can take a look at past issues of Project PLN here.

Call for posts: Feb Issue of #ProjectPLN

January’s Issue of Project PLN was all about our goals for the New Year.  February is upon us and we are still accepting posts for the February issue.  The topic: Passion (obviously!) When we think of February, we think of love. Love is the main reason we do what we do each and every day in education. We want you to share why you get up each morning and do what you do.  February is Passion month and we want to know why you are passionate about education. Feel free to contact though email projectpln10@gmail.com or Twitter @projectPLN. We would love to have your thoughts ready to share by February 8th.  This can be an article you are writing specifically for Project PLN or you can send us a related post that has already been written.

Thanks again for your continued support of Project PLN!

January Issue of Project #PLN Goals for the New Year

The January Issue of Project PLN is here!  This issue was all about your educational goals for the new year.  We appreciate everyone sharing with us and meeting some new PLN faces.  I often get the question, how do I join a PLN (Personal Learning Network)?  It could not be easier, just interact with other educators on blogs through commenting, through conversation on Twitter, through connections on a Ning, or face to face.  As soon as you do any of those things you are considered part of the PLN! I suspect that ALL of you are part of a PLN in some capacity, even if it is just talking education in the teacher’s lounge over lunch. Enjoy meeting some new educator friends in this issue of Project PLN and be inspired by their goals for education this year!

January #ProjectPLN call for submissions

Project PLN is a monthly magazine that @thenerdyteacher and I put out for free.  We collect posts from educators around the world focused on a singular topic and mesh them all into one spectacular magazine.  The goal is to help us all get to know our PLN (Personal Learning Network) better and spread the great things that are happening in education.  We would love your help for the January issue.  Take a look at the topic below and how you can submit your post for the January issue.

January’s Project PLN topic:
Every new year brings a new commitment to who we are. We set goals to accomplish to make ourselves better people. In education, it is no different. We want to know what your goals are for making education better for you, your students and everyone around you. Education reform is going to continue to be a hot topic, so let’s show the world what teachers are going to do help. Feel free to contact though email projectpln10@gmail.com or Twitter @projectPLN. We would love to have your thoughts ready to share by January 8th. Thanks again for your continued support of Project PLN. We hope you enjoy the holiday season!

The post doesn’t have to be a new one, if you wrote another post on exactly this topic, feel free to submit it to us!  When you email us, please be sure to include your name as you would like it to appear, your Twitter handle (if you have one…you should!), and a URL to your blog, website, wiki, linked in profile, etc (if you have one).  Thank you for your contributions!

December #ProjectPLN: Favorite webtools

It is here! The December issue of #ProjectPLN is ready to share.  In this issue we asked everyone to share their favorite web tools.  The resulting collection is great! It is always fun to see what tools others couldn’t live without and how they use them to improve learning in their classrooms.

As a side note congratulations to my partner in crime Nick Provenzano (@thenerdyteacher) who will be presenting 2 poster sessions at ISTE 11, one of them being a session about #ProjectPLN!  Congratulations Nick, very excited for you!

The power of the #PLN: Paying it Forward

The network that educators have created through social media is seriously incredible! I’m often asked by non-educators how they can build such a supportive presence with social media. My answer: I’m not really sure, this PLN network works because it is full of caring, amazing educators who have decided to support each other in all kinds of awesome ways. We share each other’s work, we offer support, we meet up to have a drink together, we help each other when we are ready to give up. It truly is remarkable!

A few years ago, our friend Beth Still wanted to demonstrate the power of social networks and PLNs while also assisting a “newbie” in attending ISTE. The ISTE Newbie Project was born! Beth asked people in her network to consider contributing a small amount of money ($10, $25) to help pay for the travel, registration, and hotel costs for someone to attend the international conference for the first time. Each year, over $2000 was raised to cover the costs for that year’s newbie. The beauty of this project, however, was that many people contributed relatively small amounts. Because our networks are growing, it was easy for an individual to only donate $10 or so, yet the project could be fully funded. This was that power of networking that Beth wanted to illustrate!

As we look forward to the 5Sigma Education Conference in the next few weeks, we’ve heard from a few who planned to join us, but whose districts won’t pay for travel. We thought back to the Newbie Project and wondered if we could provide travel funds for someone to join us at 5Sigma.

Eric Johnson, aka “yourkidsteacher,” is a teacher from South Bend, Indiana whom we asked to join us at 5Sigma and share his new project, erasemeanness.org. Eric has been a huge supporter of our work, and we have been really looking forward to him joining us for our inaugural conference. Eric’s district was not able to provide his travel funds, however, and he shared that he would not be able to come to 5Sigma. When we remembered the “crowd-sourcing” that happened with the ISTE Newbie Project, we thought we should consider doing something similar.

Here is the part where you come in, valued PLN member! The 5Sigma Pay it Forward Travel Fund is the same model as described for the Newbie Project. If only 50 people decide to donate $10 after reading and sharing this idea, Eric’s flight will be fully funded. We have two weeks to raise $500.

The networking value depends upon how many people see this project and choose to donate a small amount… and then SHARE with others. Let’s demonstrate the power of networks and, together, we can do something really great for an amazing educator. Please share out the Pay it Forward #5sigma project. Please consider donating $10 to help a fellow educator *donate through paypal at the bottom of this page*. The great thing about paying it forward- it generally comes back ten-fold. Thank you for your support!
