Up On My Soapbox

I don’t know if it is because the Democratic National Convention is in Denver, or the candidates demand more attention, or there is more media coverage than usual, or just because I am getting to an age where I am more interested; but this election year I am following everything more closely and digging a little deeper into the different issues.  One of the hot topic issues for me is education.  I have to say, I’m not really compelled by either candidates “plan.”  On the surface the plans sound really good.  Higher pay for teachers= Good.   Merit pay for educators who are going above and beyond= Good.  Education that makes our students global competitors= Good.  Education with a focus on 21st century skills= Good.  High quality education for all= Good.   More money toward education= Good.   My problem comes in how this is actually going to play out.  Simply throwing more money at the education system is not EVER going to solve the problem.  I work in one of the wealthiest counties in the United States.  Our schools have money, technology, great teachers, etc.  And yet, only about 80% of students are graduating high school.  Granted this is significantly higher than the country’s average, but even with all of the advantages that money brings, it still isn’t 100%.

Paying teachers more is a FABULOUS idea and one that I hope moves forward, but just because a teacher is paid more does not mean that education will get better.  Merit pay is a wonderful idea in theory, but HOW do we decide who deserves merit pay, a test, a popularity contest?  Does the government know what a good teacher I am or how invested I am in my students success (I know that this will be delegated to people who may know but really, my own colleagues don’t know what a good teacher I am.  They have no idea that I attend online conferences, conversations, and research.  They have no idea that I update a blog daily giving teachers ideas for integrating technology in their classroom.  They have no idea that I interact with teachers all over the world on a daily basis to learn how to be a better teacher.)  And again, just because I am making more money does not necessarily mean that I am educating students better than I did last week. I am obviously a HUGE fan of 21st century learning and teaching and believe that it is a necessity, but I am not naive enough to think that just because I am teaching 21st century skills that it is going to change the education of America’s children.  There are a host of reasons that kids come to school not ready to learn.  Just because we are teaching the latest and greatest doesn’t mean that our students are ready to soak it all in.

A few weeks ago I was hit with an overwhelming sense that education is so much more than what happens inside the classroom and school.  Kids aren’t coming to school prepared to learn.  They have needs that have to be met before they can take in anything we have to give them (no matter how shiny, new, and expensive it is).  If a child isn’t getting a good breakfast before school they aren’t focused on learning, they are focused on a hungry tummy.  I have had students in my classroom who were being abused.  A child with a cigarette burn on their arm is not concerned about the phonics lesson of the day, no matter how compelling it is.  Kids who are made the “parent” in their home and are put in charge of all their brothers and sisters are thinking about that, not your wonderful math lesson.  When a family member is dying of cancer students aren’t focused on the science lesson.  There are a lot of factors outside the school that put a stress on education.  None of them can be addressed by the school system alone.  Then their are kids growing up in families and communities where education isn’t valued.  This isn’t just happening in inner city schools where kids are practically raising themselves.  I have students who tell me on a daily basis that no one in their family reads…not even a newspaper.  I believe them.  Kids who grow up in a community where education isn’t valued have no reason to succeed and continue their education.  They don’t connect success in life with education and the ability to be a life long learner.   I realized that whenever we hear a success story of a kid who beat all the odds, was the first to graduate high school; made it out of the slums, they always say the same thing…”my mom (grandma, aunt, uncle, dad, grandpa) told me that education was the most important thing.”  Someone in their lives instilled in them the value of education.  We have a large portion of the population who doesn’t value education.  In the wealthier communities it may be because they place more value on the sports and activities that kids are involved in.  In the poorer communities it may be because the parents didn’t get an education that they felt was of value in their lives.

A test is never going to improve education on its own.  Students don’t need to learn to memorize random facts and regurgitate them on a state mandated test.  All that a test shows is superior short term memory.  We live in an age where any information you could ever need to know is at your finger tips all the time.  Any child will tell you “I can just Google it”.  They are right.  Memorization is not necessarily a prized skill any more.  Kids need to learn how to search out information, how to evaluate, how to communicate, how to solve problems, how to think critically, how to work creatively.   Teaching has to be relevant to students or they aren’t going pay attention.  What good is education that doesn’t involve?  Technology opens many of these doors to students but what good is all the technology in the world if we don’t have educators who know how to use it?    Technology is changing daily at an ever increasing rate.  How can we expect educators to teach with technology if we aren’t offering continuous training, state of the art tech support, and the infrastructure to allow it all to happen? Kids need education that is relevant to the world they are living in.  A test, by the way, is NOT relevant.  Kids have enough factors pulling them away from learning, we don’t need to help the situation by making education irrelevant.  The problem is that schools are run by tests.

No Child Left Behind makes me absolutely crazy.  When you listen to the concept it is great, the problem is that it doesn’t play out realistically in schools.  So, all this to say that no matter how good the words sound, education is not going to be an easy fix.  Ever.  I’m not sure that the government can really change the education system.  Communities need to get involved, let kids know how important education is. Families need to come together and support each other in all of their struggles.  Schools need to decide that teachers are going to be provided ongoing education that is relevant to the current global climate.  Teachers need to create lessons that are engaging and teach kids how to learn.   Education is something that everyone has to be “in” on.  Schools can’t do it alone.  Teachers can’t do it alone.  The government can’t do it alone.  It is going to take everyone working together with a common goal to fix this problem.

I recently heard of a local program that I LOVE and must learn more about.  The idea behind the program is to take kids who don’t have wonderful educations, because of all the reasons listed above, and to house them, commune with them, teach them how valuable education is, provide them with a state of the art education, and mentor them.  The students in this program go back to be leaders in their communities.  They take what they have learned and bring it back to their community.  I love the idea of making kids leaders in their communities.  It is programs like this one that are going to change education.  (I will post more about this program for those who are interested).

WizIQ

 

What it is: WizIQ is a virtual classroom platform where you can teach and learn.  You can teach for free or earn money teaching.  The WizIQ is free to use, has no downloads (it runs in your web browser), and works on Macs, Windows, and Linux.  WizIQ provides a place to find, share, or upload PowerPoints on educational subjects and topics.  The sessions are intuitive to use and can be scheduled for individal students or a group.  The virtual classroom provides a place to teach and learn live online.  Everything launches in a few clicks with…NO downloads!  With WizIQ you can network with students or teachers, send a personalized invite to your contacts right from WizIQ.  Share educational content in the form of slideshows, pdf, and online.  When you start a session with students, you have access to a shared whiteboard space, live audio, video, or both, flash file sharing, and text messaging.  Sessions can be recorded and saved for students to view again and again.  

 

How to integrate WizIQ into the classroom: WizIQ is a great place to start experimenting with virtual classrooms.  It has a simple to use interface, requires no downloads, and is free.  Record lessons that you are doing with your class so that they can go back and review the lesson online at their lesiure.  This puts students in control of their own learing.  Interact with students during live virtual sessions.  WizIQ is also perfect for students who were absent, have a long term illness that prevents them from being at school, or students who know they will be attending your school for half of the year.  

 

Tips: You can make money by setting up and teaching in a virtual classroom (and lets face it, we could all use a little more of that!)  Your classroom will be visable by search engines and open to students from accross the world.  Don’t let the technology scare you, this is simple to use (even my fellow elementary teachers can get in on this one!)

Ed.VoiceThread


What it is: I have posted about Voice Thread in the past, but Voice Thread has added a new education community that has some pretty incredible features. Ed.VoiceThread is a secure collaborative network designed specifically for the k-12 school environment. Teachers and students can collaborate around almost any type of media including voice, text, webcam, and drawing commentary in a secure environment. Access is restricted to k-12 educators, students, and administrators to ensure safe classroom collaboration. Ed.VoiceThread is an accountable environment, which means that all users are responsible for their content and behavior. Some added features that you will find on Ed.VoiceThread are, students have individual accounts that are easily viewable to educators, students can create, edit, and manage their own portfolio, students cannot add contacts or send invitations to any users outside of the Ed.Voice Thread community, and they cannot view any content that is not created by an Ed.Voice Thread member. Teachers can quickly view and access all students’ Voice Threads. Voice Threads can be made private or public depending on the assignment and requirements. Ed.VoiceThread comes in two packages one free and the other, called Pro, for $60/year. Free users can only create 3 VoiceThreads, have 75 MB of storage, no uploading of MP3 comments, 30 min of webcam commenting, advertising will be present, single file size limit of 25 MB, and no downloads of the media. In the Pro version, students can create an unlimited number of Voice Threads, get 10GB of storage, can upload MP3 comments, have unlimited webcam commenting, 30 archival movie exports, no advertising, single file size limit of 100MB and allows downloads of media.

How to integrate Ed.VoiceThread into the classroom: Ed.VoiceThread is the ideal place for students and teachers to collaborate and interact with digital media. The added functionality for schools with Ed.VoiceThread is very useful. Students can use Ed.VoiceThread to create digital stories, documentaries, practice and document language skills, explore geography and culture, solve math problems, and much more. As a teacher, I like VoiceThread as a place to teach. Because everything is web-based, you can upload a days lessons to Ed.VoiceThread for students to refer to and collaborate with while doing homework. I well remember the days when I would sit in math class learning the days equations. Everything made perfect sense to me while I was sitting in the classroom watching problems being worked. But at home, with no guide homework seemed impossible. Ed.VoiceThread makes you your students personal tutor. The self paced learning is amazing! I love giving students tools that allow them to be in charge of their own learning. Is there any better lesson in life than knowing how to learn?

PalBee

 

What it is: PalBee is a free online video conferencing/recording tool. When you become a registered member of PalBee you have the ability to create an unlimited number of video conferencing sessions, each can be an hour long, with up to 5 attendees. PalBee also allows for visual collaboration on the online whiteboard. The Whiteboard allows you to upload images and write or draw on top of it.

How to integrate PalBee into your curriculum: PalBee could be useful in the classroom in several different ways. The first is for its intended purpose, video conferencing. If you have a pen pal or buddy classroom, set up times throughout the year for your students to video conference. All that you need is a web cam and Internet connection. Your students will really enjoy conferencing with students in another state or across the world. After you have conferenced with your buddy classroom, consider collaborating on a project together. PalBee provides a great workspace for students to share ideas. PalBee can also be used as a place to record tutorials for your students. You can individualize instruction and record several lessons that can be saved by PalBee and used from year to year. If you have students who are having trouble reading, extend their learning day and “go home” with them using PalBee. A struggle in many schools is getting parents to read with or help their child study at home. If a parent isn’t available or doesn’t make it a priority, students can get onto your saved PalBee recordings and learn with you at their own pace. This may have the added benefit of modeling reading and studying to parents. Have a parent who can’t make a parent teacher conference? Set up a PalBee meeting with them that better fits into the schedule.

Tips: Set up a classroom account for PalBee where all of your recordings can be saved for quick access.

Viddler

What it is: Viddler is an AMAZING web application that lets students (or you) upload, enhance, and share digital video quickly and easily right from your web browser. I know, cool right?! The best part is, students can collaborate and comment on each other’s Viddler videos.

How to integrate Viddler into the classroom: Viddler has a million and one uses in the classroom. Record students science experiments and invite other students to comment on what was successful or what they would do differently in the experiment. Have students make a commercial about…well anything. Use your curriculum to guide the videos that your students are creating and then invite them to leave comments on other students videos. Create video tutorials for your classroom and add “secret facts” in the video in the form of comments. There is truly no limit! I often have my students create commercials because they are short and easy to record and share with others. In lieu of a book report, ask students to create a movie trailer type commercial for their book. Video adds a whole new audience for students, you will see creativity bloom. Be sure to check out the Directors Guild post below for some great uses of Viddler! After you record your videos you can embed them in your classroom blog, wiki, or website. Seriously cool huh?!

Tips: Create a class Viddler login where all class videos are recorded and saved. This will save the headache of collecting email addresses and passwords from the younger students…trust me, they will NOT remember them!

Kinetic City

What it is: The Kinetic City Super Crew needs students help to save their virtual world of Vearth from the science-distorting computer virus, Deep Delete. Students work together to perform engaging science activities and then download their data to the Super Crew to help repair their world. Kinetic City provides students in grades 3-5 a fun interactive way to learn standards based science. There are 100 fun science based activities to participate in. These activities can be done through physical experiments, internet research, interactive science games on Kinetic City, art projects, and physical activities. The complete Kinetic City experience was intended for use as an after school program, starting a Kinetic City club cost money but use of the online materials and games is free.

How to integrate Kinetic City into the classroom: Since Kinetic City activities are all standards based, they should fit right into your third through fifth grade curriculum. The interactive games, experiments and activities are wonderful to use as an extension of current classroom activities. Game and activity topics include gravity, the human body, human body systems, learning, animal adaptation and classification, power and energy, and more.

NoteSake

What it is: NoteSake is an online note taking tool for students and teachers. Students (or teachers) can take and organize notes online. This makes it easy to access notes from any Internet connected computer. NoteSake also provides students or teachers with the ability to collaborate in groups. Students can take notes for a group project in NoteSake and share with other group members. NoteSake is a God-send for the student who missed a class due to an illness…other students or teachers can share the notes from the day with the student who was absent. NoteSake offers several options for organizing notes; organize by name, date, class, or custom tags that the student adds to the notes.

How to integrate NoteSake into the classroom: NoteSake can be used to teach students how to take and organize notes. Aside from taking everyday type class notes, NoteSake is ideally suited for taking notes while completing research projects. Students can research on the Internet, in the library, or from home and access their notes any time they need to. No more forgetting where all the research papers are stashed. NoteSake also makes it easy for students to collaboratively gather information for projects. NoteSake makes it easy to share notes with others, absent students no longer have an excuse!

Tips: NoteSake requires a valid email address to activate your account. If you teach students who do not have an email address, you could use a teacher email for activation purposes.

Play Music

What it is: Play Music is a site where students can explore and interact with music. Students can visit Carnegie Hall for listening adventures, take a seat in the orchestra and listen to and learn about the different sections and sounds of the orchestra, try writing their own music, learn about the symphony, “meet” a concert master, “meet” an instrument builder and composer, and “meet” young composers.

How to integrate Play Music into the classroom: Play Music is an excellent way to introduce students to the Orchestra or Symphony. This is a great site for encouraging a love of music. Use this site as a research tool. Students can learn about different instruments in the orchestra. A lesson that I love to use with this site is to assign each student an instrument to study. Students then make baseball type trading cards in a word document that has a picture of the instrument, the name, and a description of the instrument. Students can print out a few pages of their baseball cards (6 cards should fit on one document). Students then trade their Orchestra cards and when the project is finished, they have a complete orchestra.

Tips: To complete the baseball card idea above, create a template in Word or Pages for the students. This way each students cards will turn out with the same dimensions. To save a document as a template, goto the “file” menu and click on “Save as template” option.

Interactives

What it is: Interactives is a truly amazing website for teachers and students. Interactives provides educators and students with strategies, content, and activities that can enhance and improve students’ skills in a variety of curricular areas including math, literature and language, science, history, and the arts. The site has great webquest/interactive activities on a variety of subjects for first through twelfth grades. These activities are extremely well done. The spelling bee activity is really the only activity appropriate for first grade but I found that many of the activities that were rated for middle and high school students, would be appropriate for elementary students as well. I cannot say enough about this site, it is a truly amazing site for teachers and students!

How to integrate Interactives into the classroom: Interactives has a variety of interactive activities for the subjects listed above. These would be great to use as an introduction to a new unit, or as a learning activity or field trip in a unit. The Interactives could be completed as a whole class (using a projector), in groups (center style in the one or two computer classroom), or individually (in the computer lab setting). Any of these options would be time well spent for your students! Each Interactive presents the student with information about the unit and follows with interactive activities such as building a roller coaster, collecting rocks, or tracing the growth of the United States.
